As a furniture repairer, I feel it is very important to be professional at all times while still maintaining the feeling that you are with a friend that really cares about you and your furniture. I love what I do and make every effort to make certain that my clients are more than satisfied with my work. I do most of my furniture repair and touch-up in my client's home.

Now after more than 40 years of working on all types of wood furniture
(and more than 30 years as a piano tuner including piano touch-ups), I feel that there isn't anyone in the area that does what I'm capable of. I have done work for many local moving companies, as well as cleaning services, insurance, carpet and remodeling companies. I have also been asked by piano manufacturers to do their repairs as well. You can see some before-and-after photos of my work.

Rather than costly furniture replacement, I can repair and bring new life to your wood furniture. Working on-site, I use superior products and advanced techniques for great results and quality furniture restoration. I offer a variety of residential and commercial repair and restoration services, including:
- Wood furniture cleaning and polishing
- Scratch, nick, gouge and veneer repair
- Furniture structural repair and joint stabilization
- Office furniture repair (conference tables, desks, etc.)

Furniture I have experience repairing:
Chairs: kitchen chairs, dining room chairs, captains chairs
Tables: dining room tables, kitchen tables, coffee tables, end tables
Dining Room Sets: hutch, breakfront, buffet, servers
Bedroom Furniture: beds, head & foot boards, dressers, armoirs, dressing tables, night tables
Office Furniture: desks, wood cabinets, waiting room chairs & tables, conference tables
Antique Furniture

If you have questions about your furniture, please check out my frequently asked questions section, FAQs. And if you are looking for other furniture services that I do not offer such as vinyl and leather repair, refinishing or caning, I have a list of furniture links which I update from time to time.

I also make wood turned pens out of exotic and beautiful varieties of woods which make a great custom gift.

Testimonials

Thank You again for taking care of Mrs. S's Piano and DR Hutch. I spoke with her moments ago and she is very happy with the repairs you made for us. As you know, she is VERY picky and these two pieces were quite important to her. As usual, you came through with the same great job you always do. I have long appreciated your work and it's always a pleasure doing business with you. Until our next claim...

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the quality piano service that you provide for us here at Menchey Music Service in Timonium, MD. Many of our customers have been complimentary about your promptness, good communication, integrity and quality work. You are always easy to reach, work us into your schedule at your earliest convenience and arrive on time as you promised. Your knowledge and experience of pianos and finish work is vast. I was recently very impressed with the work you did on the damaged case of a polished mahogany Yamaha grand. You totally made the damage disappear and I was amazed! I appreciate your fine work and will never hesitate to recommend you to our piano customers.

We have used Mr. Cohen's services three times to repair furniture. Chuck not only provided fast and efficient service, but, more importantly, the results have been excellent, and we have been extremely satisfied with his work. Based upon our experience, we recommend him very highly.

Our wooden kitchen table had scratch marks and knicks. Chuck said it would need sanding, restaining, and a polyureathane coating. These were repairs that he did not have the facilities to do, so I was unable to throw any business his way. Nevertheless, he offered me referrals and recommendations for getting that job and other minor repairs done. He seemed very prefessional and knowledgeable and I appreciated hearing his ideas.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. I have white rings on my furniture. Can they be removed?
A. In most cases they can be either totally removed or made 75% to 90% better. These rings are caused by moisture getting between the top finish and the base wood of the furniture. I have products that will penetrate the top coat and evaporate the moisture, thereby removing the water marks.
Q. I have dining room chairs that have broken legs where they attach to the frame. Can this be fixed?
A. Yes, they can usually be made as strong as new. I completely disassemble the chair, remove the broken dowels, install new dowels, then glue and reassemble the chair. This process is done in my shop and not the customer's house. The job takes too long to do in your home and is fairly messy because of the drilling, gluing, etc.
Q. I have a deep gouge, scratch or chip in my furniture, how is that repaired?
A. First, I DO NOT USE WAX FILLERS. Some furniture repair people use wax or crayon type fillers. This type of product is very soft and not long lasting. It is the cheap, easy way to fix something. I use special resins that come in a multitude of colors. I match the color of your furniture, then heat and melt these resins with a special tool and apply it to the damage. It is then smoothed, shaped, sanded and colored to make an almost invisible long lasting permanent repair.
Q. What is the difference between refinishing and touch-up and restoration?
A. Refinishing is the complete removal of the top coat using very harsh and caustic chemicals. The furniture is then sanded, stained and resprayed several times to the original finish. When this is done correctly the piece looks like it was new. This process requires special equipment, safety precautions, etc. This is a specialty in itself, I do not do this type of work. Touch-up or restoration on the other hand is designed to maintain the original finish and look of the piece that is being worked on, and I do offer these services.
Q. I have molding on my hutch that is missing or loose. Can that be fixed or replaced?
A. In most cases it can. But each type of furniture is different, so this type of repair is a little more involved than normal. Hopefully I can match the missing piece or pieces.
Q. Do you give free estimates?
A. I normally do not give free estimates. In most cases I can do the repair within an hour or two. It is not economical for me to travel to your home, give an estimate of say $150.00, leave and then come back again to do the work. In most cases, I can give you an idea of what it will cost by your description of the problem over the phone.
Q. What type of furniture repair do you do?
A. Here is a partial list of repairs I do:
  • fix bed
  • repair table
  • repair scratch
  • fix bedroom set
  • repair paint stain
  • repair deep gouge
  • repair broken chair
  • repair deep scratch
  • fix dining room table
  • replace missing veneer
  • repair scratch in veneer top
  • finishing touch-up to furniture

ABOUT CHUCK COHEN

  • I was born and raised in Philadelphia and moved to Baltimore in 1960.
  • I was on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1963. I was on board the USS Randolph CVS15 aircraft carrier when we picked up Virgil "Gus" Grissom on his return from space. I was also in the blockade off Cuba during the Cuban missile crisis. Since the USS Randolph was converted to an anti-submarine warfare carrier sometime after World War II, the ship was sent to Cuba to try and prevent Russian submarines from reaching Cuba. There was an incident where we actually tracked a Russian submarine long enough that it was forced to surface.
  • I attended Univ. of Maryland and received my B.S. degree from the University of Baltimore.
  • I have been working with and fascinated with wood most of my life from wood shop in both junior and high school to having my own woodworking shop in my home. I'm a piano tuner and due to a piano being such a large piece of furniture, there were always damages to the cabinet and other wood case parts. Since none of the other technicians in the Baltimore area did this type of work, and with my love of woodworking, I started doing the repairs, touch-up and restoration of piano cabinetry and related parts. I have always been mechanically inclined so naturally gravitated to other forms of wood related repairs.
  • I also make jewelry boxes, tables, boxes, wood turned pens and bowls and lidded boxes all out of exotic and beautiful varieties of woods which make great gifts.
